SPANISH LANGUAGE & MEXICAN CULTURE IMMERSION PROGRAM

Join our Spanish Language & Mexican Culture Immersion Program!

Have you been seeking an opportunity to immerse yourself in the Spanish language and explore another culture?

Join our Spanish Language & Mexican Culture Immersion Program from June 24-July 5, 2024 or July 22-August 2, 2024, just a couple of hours south of the California/ Mexico border in beautiful Ensenada, Baja California! This immersive program is held in Ensenada, Baja California for two weeks in the summer in collaboration with our partner university, Universidad Xochicalco, and designed as a fun and adventurous international education journey. Practice and enhance your Spanish both on campus and on Ensenada’s beaches, while exploring the historic district and open-air food & arts markets, while sipping on wine and touring Valle de Guadalupe vineyards, and in the midst of learning traditional Mexican dances & recipes and all about Mexico’s history and traditions - all alongside a warm, vibrant community including Mexican students-turned-friends!

What's in store during these two weeks at Universidad Xochicalco, Campus Ensenada?!

Students should plan to arrive at the U.S. - Mexico international border on the morning of June 24, 2024 (first session & cohort) or July 22, 2024 (second session & cohort). As a group, we will cross into Mexico all together and drive down to Universidad Xochicalco Ensenada's campus in the "Xochi Van" (university transport we will use throughout the trip) by an official university chauffeur. Once we arrive, you will meet the rest of the team (faculty, staff and peer mentors, who are Universidad Xochicalco students), and tour the campus. We'll host a welcome ceremony and luncheon and you'll start to get to know our Mexican peer mentors, then participate in a cultural activity to break the ice and learn some Mexican traditions. Afterwards, we'll drop you off with your host family for the evening, with whom you will have dinner, and of course, practice your Spanish.

The typical schedule for the rest of the weekdays includes approximately 4 hours daily of classes on campus (with breaks in between, of course) designed to improve your Spanish listening, speaking, reading and writing, according to your level, as well as expose you to Mexican history, culture and society alongside unique supplemental guest lectures and workshops. Typically, our classes are structured such that the first half is theory-based and the second half is practice-focused.

Outside of the classroom, you’ll participate in a variety of cultural activities, including cooking workshops at the campus Gastronomy lab, a dance & arts class, a community bonfire and a tour of Ensenada's cultural district and downtown. During the weekend, we'll spend the day visiting Valle de Guadalupe vineyards and participating in their wine-growing tours and tastings, and Sunday will be a rest day to spend with host families and explore the area. ¡Aprende, viaja y explora con nosotros! FAQs:
What Spanish level do I need to participate?

We recommend that you enter with an A2 or above level of Spanish using the CERF scale. If you’re not sure of your level, reach out to us and we are happy to conduct a no-cost evaluation and offer resources to help you reach your goals. If you would like to brush up on your Spanish beforehand, we offer private and small-group lessons tailored to your level, needs and interests. Whether you’re a near-beginner, intermediate, advanced or heritage speaker - whether your goals are to (re)connect with your roots & family members, to better communicate with the 42 million Spanish speakers in the U.S. or nearly 500 million Spanish speakers worldwide, to expand your professional opportunities in a particular field or all of the above, we’re here for you.

What makes you different?

We are born of and informed by the fascinating culture & endless opportunities of the Baja-Cali border region. We believe that our program location’s uniqueness, as well as its proximity to the California border, is both of interest to many participants as well as an added accessibility factor. Most importantly, we partner with a multi-campus university system known for its academic excellence and thriving student life, and this collaboration and the rich resources it provides - partner faculty and peer students, safe & state-of-the-art facilities, academic and cultural programming - allows us to make the magic happen. Our partner university offers academic programs in Architecture, Design, Communications, Marketing, Business, Education, Law, Criminal Justice, Bioengineering, Psychology, Nutrition, and more - so if you want a lesson or experience related to any of these fields, let us know and we can likely make it happen!

Where will I stay?

True intercultural exchange - sharing meals, conversations, trips, daily life, and authentically living alongside locals is a cornerstone of what we believe true immersion to be. For this reason, we cultivate long standing relationships with our trusted and carefully-vetted host families, who will welcome you with open arms and show you what it’s like to eat, live, travel, study, learn and enjoy life in México. *If you prefer a different arrangement, such as staying on-campus, let us know and may be able to accommodate this on a case-by-case basis depending on space and availability. If you prefer to stay at an AirBnB or with someone you know in the area, we can discount the accommodations from the cost of the trip and you would be responsible for your own accommodations.

I’m super interested! How do I prepare?

Make sure you will have a valid passport through at least the end of the desired dates you would like to attend. If you don’t have a passport or it’s expiring soon, apply to attain or renew one as soon as possible! Finally, reach out to us with any questions you may have - we love hearing from you and are here to help you decide if our programs are a good fit for your goals, interests and profile. If you would like to save your spot, register below. If you have any questions, please reach out to info@ceneu.com or regina@ceneu.com.

Can I attend with my friend/ family member / classmate?

Yes! You’re welcome to join with a friend, family member or partner with an adventurous spirit who loves to travel & is also committed to deepening their Spanish fluency (as we ask our participants to commit to a language pledge throughout their time with us). We find that participants tend to grow the most when placed outside of their comfort zones, but if you would like to be placed in the same host family or accommodations as someone else, registering early is the most likely to guarantee this.

Are you still hosting the Medical Spanish Immersion Program in conjunction with Xochicalco School of Medicine?

Yes! We are still hosting our specialized MedSpanish immersion program for both students and providers in the health field during the same dates, which incorporates MedSpanish classes, shadowing at my clinics and hospitals, and Public Health field experience. Both tracks will be held synchronously, so that friends, family members and colleagues can travel and spend time in Mexico together regardless of which track they are in. Let us know if you have any questions!
